ASU Archery is Back!

Arizona State University (ASU) has officially re-entered competition in the sport of Archery!   Archery ceased to be a varsity sport at ASU in the early 1990’s due to ASU Athletic Department decisions.  Until that point, the program had won more national titles (men's archery 15 times, women's archery 21 times, and mixed archery 20 times) than any other athletic group at ASU while additionally boasting numerous World and Olympic team members and medalists.

Sun Devil Archery is bringing that winning tradition back to the Valley.  As such, a few dedicated archers have joined together to form a campus club to promote the sport and its competition.

2008 AZ Qualifiers

Once again, there are a few of us who still need USAT scores before US Target Nationals... and many more of us who just need the practice (since there haven't been many FITAs shot this year)  So... it occured to me that we should host a couple of qualifiers and OR rounds again this year to try to get those in.  Totally casual, but legal.  No awards, and excess funds (if any) go to Sun Devil Archery.

It seems to me that it would be great practice with nice people and hopefully a take some pressure off from having to shoot specific scores at Nats.

Here is the plan:

EVENT 1:  June 28-29      FITA     Papago

EVENT 2:  July 4-6          Double 70/OR      Papago

In order to make the ORs legal, we have to have some sort of Qualifier to rank people.  So, if we shoot the double 70 on Friday night, we can technically rank folks.  OR Round Robin matches will work for USAT scores AND the matches do not have to be shot against a person in your class or division.  If you shoot the score, you shoot the score.  So, Men's Compound against a Women's Recurve is fine.  The Round Robin format keeps people from being eliminated and increases the chances of hitting that OR score.  Plus... Tempe has some GREAT 4th of July Fireworks at the lake... so you can make a weekend of it!

EVENT 3:   July 19-20      FITA/OR       Papago

EVENT 4:   July 26-27      FITA/OR       Papago

We am trying to avoid "surface of the sun" hot times, so you will notice in the attachment, some VERY early mornings.

Also, we can take either Event 3 or 4 to PSE if there is interest, but we would need to know very soon so that we can plan accordingly.

The more participants, the more OR folks in the Round Robins, and the more chances to shoot that minimun score.

The REG FORM says you can sign up the day of the event, but a heads would really be helpful.

2008 US Intercollegiate Archery Championships

World University Trials

Only three years after returning to ASU, Sun Devil Archery claimed its 2nd Individual Collegiate National Champion.  A total of four members were selected for 2007/08 All-American team.  The Men’s Recurve team defeated #1 seed Texas A&M to claim 3rd place, while the 6 member ASU combined squad (6 short of a complete team) finished the tournament in 5th place overall despite their lacking numbers.

The 2008 US Intercollegiate Archery Championships (USIACs) were held May 16-18, 2008 in Mays Landing, New Jersey.  Over 150 athletes qualified from 36 schools around the nation to participate in the tournament. This year's USIACs also served as the team trials for the 2008 World University Championships, which will be held July 7-10 in Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) where top US college athletes in numerous sports will compete with university athletes from around the world.

In the men's recurve division, Dakota Sinclair (ASU junior) led the qualifying rounds and then took the collegiate national title by defeating Jeff Anderson (University of Washington) in the finals.

USIACs Champions are determined advancing through seeded brackets via head-to-head elimination shoot-offs of 12 arrows each, just as occurs in Olympic and World competitions.

Dakota, who is a transfer student, was named All-American for the third time in his college archery career and will be representing the US in Taiwain at the World University Games in July.  He was also awarded with All-Academic honors (Top 25% in competition with a GPA over 3.0).  Dakota Sinclair finished 10th at the recent US Olympic Archery Trials.

Lindsay Pian, who recently finished 4th the US Olympic Archery Trials, won the event in 2006.  Lindsay took time off from ASU to train full time for the trials and will return to ASU in the Fall of 2008.

Team Captain and two-time returning All-American, Ted Harden (ASU senior), finished the qualifying rounds in 9th Place and finished 6th during the elimination rounds for the recurve men.  Ted therefore closed out his final season for ASU with his 3rd All-American team selection.

Ted and Dakota met each other in the quarter-finals of the elimination matches for one of the most exciting (and highest scoring) showdowns of the tournament.

Maggie Huff (ASU sophomore) came to this year’s tournament with an entirely new shooting style.

Maggie finished 2nd last year in the women’s recurve division, earning her 06/07 All-American honors.  This season, Maggie switched to a compound style bow.

At this year’s USIACs, she finished the qualifying rounds in 7th place and finished 5th during the elimination rounds for the compound ladies.  This earned Maggie All-American honors for 07/08.  It appears through records that Maggie is the first archer in collegiate history to earn All-American status (never-the-less back to back) in either the men’s and/or women’s recurve and compound divisions.  Maggie was also named as an All-Academic.

Ashley Votruba
(ASU junior) went into the event as a returning All-American.

Ashley finished the
qualifying rounds in 10th place, but lost to Maggie in the 1/16th elimination round.  However, Ashley’s scores were strong enough to earn her a second All-American title.

It takes three archers to comprise a “team” for any particular division (Men’s Recurve, Men’s Compound, Women’s Recurve, Women’s Compound).  ASU was only able to field a Men’s Recurve team (Dakota, Ted, and Andrew Reading).  However, the ASU team defeated the #1 seed, Texas A&M, to take the bronze medal.

The Overall Team placements are based on complicated calculations which are based off of 3 members (a team) in each of the four divisions for a total of 12 archers.  Thanks to outstanding individual performances, but with only 6 archers on the field, ASU managed a 5th place finish!

All-American awards are given to the top ten athletes in each division.  All-American placement is determined by combining each archer’s scores from the US Indoor Nationals, which was held in March, with his/her scores from the USIACs.
